The Best Gluten Free Bread For Grilled Cheese

Grilled Cheese is one of those meals that you need to be able to make with whatever gluten free bread you choose. Grilled Cheese, Toast, and untoasted Sandwiches are the top things bread I choose for my own family needs to be able to do.

For grilled cheese sandwiches, the top bread in our tests was Against the Grain’s Fresh Rosemary Baguette. The top sandwich bread in our test for grilled cheese was Schar Artisan bread. The baguette was better for grilled cheese due to the flavor and unique texture.

We took 9 different brands of bread and followed the same procedure to make Grilled Cheese Sandwiches. Having done this makes it easy to compare all of them side by side. And we were able to rank them based on these side-by-side comparisons.

The Best Gluten Free Bread For Grilled Cheese Rankings

The best bread to make gluten free Grilled Cheese Sandwiches is an important test to run when we are looking at what is the best overall gluten free bread.

Some of the things we considered when ranking them were caramelization of the outside of the sandwich, texture of the bread after it was toasted, flavor of the bread, and how well it went together with the other flavors.

Here is how we ranked the bread for Grilled Cheese:

  1. Against the Grain Fresh Rosemary Baguette
  2. Schar Artisan Bread
  3. Udi’s Multigrain
  4. Franz Gluten Free Bread
  5. Sam’s Choice Gluten Free Bread
  6. Kroger 7 Grain Gluten Free Bread
  7. Rudi’s Gluten Free Bread
  8. Canyon Bakehouse Hawaiian
  9. Simple Truth – Puff Bunz

We spread butter on the outside of the bread and put it in an electric skillet. I added shredded cheese and then topped the sandwich with the other piece of bread. It cooked in the skillet at about 325 until the outside was toasted and the inside was melted.

For more information on how each bread ranked in our test and what happened, read the below sections listed by the brand of gluten free bread.

How Simple Truth’s Puff Bunz Works For Grilled Cheese Sandwiches

Simple Truth Puff Bunz

Rating: 1 star

Rank: 9 out of 9

When I decided to include Puff Bunz in this test, I did not anticipate that it would rank last in every single test. I was excited to try out a ketogenic “bread” option that might actually work like bread. Unfortunately, test after test, I find it ranking last.

I took one bun and cut it to make a half sandwich. I buttered the outside of the bread and filled it with shredded cheddar cheese. I grilled it in an electric skillet until the outside was toasted and the cheese was melted.

The flavor was fine, but I also enjoy scrambled eggs and cheese. That was the real problem. It was not bread but scrambled eggs.

How Canyon Bakehouse Hawaiian Bread Works For Grilled Cheese

Canyon Bakehouse Hawaiian

Rating: 2 stars

Rank: 8 out of 9

The Hawaiian Bread is much smaller than most of Canyon Bakehouse’s loaves. But that isn’t what landed it this low on the list. The sweet flavor of the Hawaiian Bread didn’t work well with the Grilled Cheese.

I took a slice of bread and buttered one side of it. I cut it to make a half sandwich and filled the inside with shredded cheddar cheese. I toasted it in an electric skillet until it was caramelized on the outside and the cheese was melted.

We noted that we really loved the texture of this one, but the sweetness was a little too much. So if you are someone that would enjoy the sweetness of the bread with the grilled cheese, this might be a great bread for you.

How Rudi’s Gluten Free Bread Works For Grilled Cheese

Rudi’s Gluten Free Bread

Rating: 3 stars

Rank: 7 out of 9

In a test where so many turned out so well, Rudi’s was ok. When giving stars, we said that 3 stars meant it was “fine, but nothing special,” and that describes how Rudi’s Gluten Free Bread turned out for this test.

I buttered one side of bread and cut it to create a half sandwich. I put one side down in an electric skillet and added shredded cheddar cheese and then the other piece of bread. I cooked it in the skillet until it was well toasted on both sides and the cheddar cheese was melted.

It toasted up well on the outside, but there was cheese that leaked through the bread. Because I had to spread butter on the bread prior to cooking it, and the bread is so fragile, it tore and created a structural issue.

What I’d recommend doing to increase the end result is to put a small pat of butter between the bread and the pan without trying to spread it. That would have pushed this much higher on the list. But I needed to treat each sandwich the same for this test.

How Kroger’s 7 Grain Gluten Free Bread Works For Grilled Cheese

Kroger’s 7 Grain Gluten Free Bread

Rating: 3 stars

Rank: 6 out of 9

Kroger’s 7 Grain Gluten Free bread is smaller than some other slices. The sourdough flavor really pushed through in this application as it did in some others and became overwhelming. And that is the main reason it landed so low on the list.

I took one slice of bread and spread butter on one side. I cut it in order to create a half sandwich. I put it in an electric skillet with shredded cheddar cheese between the two halves of bread. I toasted it until the outside was caramelized and the cheese was melted.

Kroger’s 7 Grain Gluten Free bread is one of the firmer bread so the bread did not tear when I spread butter on it. When it heats up it doesn’t get much softer, but it does maintain the structure. The biggest issue was the flavor.

It works in some applications but in this particular one, the sourdough flavor took over everything else and it was not pleasant.

How Sam’s Choice Gluten Free Bread Works For Grilled Cheese

Sam’s Choice Gluten Free Bread

Rating: 3 stars

Rank: 5 out of 9

The major issue we had with this bread was the lack of flavor. The texture of the bread was good and it didn’t tear when I buttered it.

I took one slice of bread and buttered it on one side. I cut it in order to make a half sandwich. I filled the middle with shredded cheddar cheese and grilled it in an electric skillet until both sides were caramelized and the cheese was melted.

The real issue we had was that it just couldn’t compete with any of the other options due to the lack of flavor. The outside toasted nicely and there were no tears when it was buttered. There just wasn’t anything else to push it above the other options.

How Franz Gluten Free Bread Works For Grilled Cheese

Franz Gluten Free Bread

Rating: 4 stars

Rank: 4 out of 9

Sam’s Choice Gluten Free and Franz Gluten Free are extremely similar. The biggest difference we noticed was that Franz has a little more flavor. They were exactly the same except that Franz came out a little ahead with the flavor.

I buttered one side of the bread and cut it to make a half sandwich. I grilled it in an electric skillet with cheese between both halves. I cooked it until both sides were browned and the cheese was melted.

The bread did not tear when I buttered the bread and held up well to being grilled. The texture was good and the flavor was ok too. This is a solid choice for gluten free bread for Grilled Cheese.

But if you are looking for something that rises above the rest, the top three choices were all great.

How Udi’s Multigrain Works For Grilled Cheese

Udi’s Multigrain Bread

Rating: 4 stars

Rank: 3 out of 9

Udi’s Multigrain uses apple as a main ingredient. This adds or detracts from the end result depending on what you use it for. In this instance, the apple greatly added to the flavor of the Grilled Cheese.

I buttered a slice of bread and cut it to make a half sandwich. I added shredded cheese between the slices and grilled it in an electric skillet until it was browned on both sides and the cheese was melted.

When I buttered the bread, it badly tore. However, I was able to cut the slice so that it didn’t detract from the end result.

When this bread toasts, it carmelizes so nicely in the pan. The butter enhanced this effect in a way that complemented the Grilled Cheese.

In addition to this, the texture of the bread was delicate on the inside. The main issue was the tear in the bread and that is why it could not be ranked higher. I’d recommend putting a small pat of butter between the bread and the pan instead of spreading directly on the bread for a better result.

How Schar Artisan Bread Works For Grilled Cheese

Schar Artisan Bread

Rating: 4 stars

Rank: 2 out of 9

While Schar Artisan Bread doesn’t have the added flavor of the Udi’s or the #1 on this list, this bread performed better in other ways and made a great Grilled Cheese.

I buttered one slice of bread and cut it to make a half sandwich. Between the two slices, I added shredded cheddar cheese and grilled it in an electric skillet until both sides were well toasted and the cheese was melted.

The texture of the bread was very nice, the outside of the bread toasted very well, and the sourdough flavor came through in a way that complemented the sandwich instead of detracting from it.

In addition to this, Schar Artisan Bread did not tear when it was being buttered. I was mostly able to treat this like a “regular” bread in this test which is one of the highest compliments I can give.

How Against The Grain Fresh Rosemary Baguettes Work For Grilled Cheese

Against the Grain: Fresh Rosemary Baguettes

Rating: 4 stars

Rank: 1 out of 9

And we finally come to the number 1 on our list. The top choice. Which is a little odd of a choice seeing how small of a sandwich we ended up creating.

I sliced two pieces off of the baguette and buttered one side of each. I put shredded cheddar cheese between the slices and grilled it in an electric skillet until both sides were well toasted and the cheese was melted.

When we gave it the taste test, we were very impressed with how the bread tasted after being toasted. It was partly the flavor, but mostly how the bread was made. The mozzarella cheese in the bread was probably the biggest impact to how it performed in the test.

When it is at room temperature, the bread is very hard. So there were no tears when it was buttered.

We couldn’t give it a 5 star because we said that 5 stars mean we couldn’t imagine how to make it better. But the size of the sandwich was so tiny. If we were looking for the best bread to make mini grilled cheese, I’d give it 5 stars without hesitation.

My passion is supporting those who need to be gluten free. After my family had to transition to eating gluten free I realized how difficult it is. It is more than finding a recipe. It is about how to navigate social situations, deal with isolation, and other things that come along with it. I live in Oregon with my family, cats, and chickens.
