Owamni – Additional Information

Every business has its own story. Businesses that are dedicated gluten free are particularly rich in passion and history. This section is dedicated to the people working hard every day to provide safe gluten free food to those that need it and honor them.

Owamni is such a unique place that it is hard to fit it into the categories I have predefined for all the businesses on the Dedicated Gluten Free Finder.

This is one of the restaurants that are not shouting “gluten free food right here!” from the rooftops, but that have a dedicated gluten free kitchen quietly and allow other parts of their business to shine. For Owamni, this is preserving and celebrating Native American culture and cuisine. And while this restaurant is entirely gluten free, let’s give this space to celebrate Owamni for its primary message.

Sean Sherman founded The Sioux Chef and runs Owamni. Born in Pine Ridge, South Dakota, he has cooked in kitchens across the world for 30 years. His passion and mission are the “revitalization and awareness of indigenous foods systems in a modern culinary context.”

…gain a full understanding of bringing back a sense of Native American cuisine to today’s world.

Sean Sherman, The Sioux ChefOpens in a new tab.

What he means by this is knowledge and implementation of farming techniques, wild harvesting, cooking with wild products, land stewardship, salt and sugar manufacturing, hunting, fishing, food preservation, elemental cooking techniques, as well as Native culture, history, and migrational histories.

The Sioux Chef started as catering and food education in the twin cities, Minneapolis and St Paul, MN. He has worked in partnership with the Little Earth Community of United Tribes in Minneapolis since 2015 and helped to design and launch the Takanka Truck, a food truck specializing in pre-European contact food of the Dakotas and Minnesota territories.

The Sioux Chef is not a well-kept secret and they have been featured in many articles, radio shows, and dinners from the James Beard House in Manhattan to the United Nations.

Sean Sherman has won many awards including two James Beard Awards: one for Best American Cookbook and the other for Leadership.

Dana Thompson worked with Sean Sherman and together they founded a nonprofit together. The North American Traditional Indigenous Food Systems (NATIFS) and launch “the first Indigenous Food Lab restaurant and training center.”

Dana co-owns The Sioux Chef with Sean and is a lineal decendant of Indigenous tribes of Minnesota (Wahpeton-Sisseton and Mdewakanton Dakota) and is a proud lifelong resident of Minnesota.

She is focused on the non-profit NATIFS and

…focus her expertise on addressing and treating ancestral trauma through decolonized perspectives of honoring and leveraging Indigenous wisdom.

At the restaurant they are using “decolonized ingredients” which exclude wheat, dairy, soy, refined sugar, and pork meaning their entire menu is free from these things and they have made sure to maintain a dedicated gluten free kitchen.

The restaurant is located on “Sacred Land”

Located at OwamniYomni, the sacred site of peace and well-being for the Dakota and Anishinaabe people.

For the menu, they change seasonally as would be expected of a restaurant striving to provide ingredients native to the area.

We prioritize purchasing from Indigenous food producers locally and nationally. We have removed colonial ingredients such as wheat flour, cane sugar and dairy. We are proud to present a decolonized dining experience.

Their website is available in both English and Dakota, all part of celebrating their heritage and striving to ensure the beautiful Indigenous language, culture, and food is not allowed to completely disappear. My passion is supporting those who need to be gluten free. After my family had to transition to eating gluten free I realized how difficult it is. It is more than finding a recipe. It is about how to navigate social situations, deal with isolation, and other things that come along with it. I live in Oregon with my family, cats, and chickens.
